Let’s Declare A War On Plastic

It's time for change, Gold Coast!

Mona Hecke has promised that, when Gold Coasters vote her in as Mayor on 28 March, she will declare a war on plastic and keep the city clean and green. Speaking at a Plastic Free Gold Coast event at the Karma Collab Hub in Miami, Ms Hecke said it was exciting to see Gold Coasters take up the challenge to free the Gold Coast from plastic pollution.

“This is clearly important for the planet,” Ms Hecke said “but it has particular resonance here, on the Gold Coast, where plastic can easily escape to the ocean from our beaches, rivers and canals. Far too often, we see dolphins, turtles and seabirds that have died from eating plastic.

“And we’re not immune ourselves. There is barely an aspect of life that doesn’t involve plastic; and microplastics are increasingly prevalent in our diets, from the clothes and cosmetics we use every day.”

Ms Hecke said the elimination of unnecessary plastics is a no-brainer, and the only ethical thing to do. She explained that there are many things we can all do, including choosing compostable packaging made from organic materials, supporting local food producers and farmers markets that avoid plastic wrapping, and favouring biodegradable, re-usable and recyclable options. The more we use alternatives, the more affordable they will become.

One of Ms Hecke’s election promises is to ensure the Council is an environmental entrepreneur that will act locally and think globally, and will reduce, re-use, recycle, and repower our city with renewable energies.

I do as I say: with my own election materials, I am avoiding use of plastic corflute. I’m using fibre- based, water-resistant display board, made in Australia and printed locally with eco-friendly ink. And I’ve kept my handout materials to a minimum in favour of digital media.

“On my watch,” she said, “Council will lead by example, adopting environmentally responsible operations and supporting sustainable businesses and behaviours throughout the city.”
