I am not happy with the way our city is being managed. I’ve been listening to residents and observing the momentum of community groups rallying about different matters affecting our Gold Coast lifestyle, particularly concerns about a lack of real environmental action.
The Gold Coast needs a comprehensive strategy for sustainable development, underpinned by energy efficiency and just transition to renewable energies.
- We need more shade trees in our urban areas to reduce the heat island effect that makes our streetscapes unbearable;
- We need to design our transport policy and infrastructure to ensure that we will always be able to move efficiently around the city;
- We need to diversify our economy, innovate and generate new employment opportunities in sustainable industries;
- We need to improve our water and waste management, and
- We need to protect biodiversity through nature conservation.
Our council, and the State and Federal governments, must do better to address these matters so that instead of feeling the need to protest, residents can channel efforts into productive activities that respect and enhance our environment. It’s time for a cool change and real action.
